A Liquid Facelift offers a non-surgical alternative to traditional facelift. It’s performed in the office using soft tissue fillers such as Juvederm, Radiesse and Belotero and requires little to no downtime following the appointment.
As we get older, changes to the face below the cheekbone down to the jawline cause that drawn, tired appearance we see in the mirror. The fat in the cheek that creates volume and lift begins to sag causing hollow cheeks and more prominent folds around the nose and mouth.
Liquid facelift is an ideal option for patients in their 30’s to 50’s who still have some volume in their cheeks, are not yet ready for a permanent surgical procedure but are looking to restore volume to the cheek area and rejuvenate the eye, mouth and jawline.
For the cheek area, Juvederm Voluma or Radiesse fillers are commonly used and for the eye and mouth areas, thinner hyaluronic acid fillers such as Belotero and Juvederm Volbella work best for blending seamlessly into the cheek and jaw line.
Because the facial volume is achieved using dermal fillers, the amount used can be adjusted based on the desired outcome and look. Typically, the results of a liquid facelift last 1-2 years though the eye and mouth area may need to be injected every 6 months. Regular Botox treatments are also often recommended to help prolong the results.
Liquid Facelift with Spot Liposuction
One shortcoming of the liquid facelift is that it cannot eliminate the appearance of moderate jowling. In these instances, a liquid facelift with spot liposuction around the jowls may be recommended.
Spot liposuction of the jowl fat can be performed in the office using local anesthetic through a very small hole behind the ear to permanently remove the fat. This will smooth the jawline within a few minutes and allow the skin to tighten in the coming weeks following the procedure. Though liposuction permanently removes the fat, as we age, the fat pad under the cheek will continue to descend. This procedure may need to be repeated after 5-10 years to adjust for the additional fat descent into the jowl area, or, it may be time to consider a facelift.
In many instances, spot liposuction with a liquid facelift is all that is needed, especially in people who still have a full, rounded blush line. It requires a one to two day recovery period.
Because this technique can be done fairly quickly, it can be combined with other procedures such as Botox, chemical peels, or eyelid and neck tightening procedures. This graduated approach is precise and excellent for people who are too busy to endure the recovery time involved with a mini or full facelift. Of all the minimally invasive techniques, this is also much more cost-effective than external laser and ultrasound therapies proclaimed to be non-surgical facelifts. On scientific grounds alone, skin-tightening procedures simply cannot lift the deeper sagging tissues that cause an aged appearance.
