What is eczema?
Is eczema related to allergies?
Eczema is a disease that is caused by an underlying problem with the skin barrier. This results in the skin not effectively retaining water/moisture. Although allergies may not cause the eczema, for many people with eczema, exposure to allergens may exacerbate the eczema.
How do you treat eczema?
Skin care is the cornerstone of eczema treatment. Your allergist can advise you regarding the best skin care regimen. For some patient’s skin testing is helpful to clarify whether or not allergies are contributing to their disease. We counsel all our patients regarding avoidance measures to reduce their eczema symptoms. If needed, we will prescribe topical or oral therapies to treat eczema.
