Get Checked for Allergy & Asthma by Advanced Specialty Care in Fairfield County, CT
Why should I get my nose/eye allergies tested?
One in five Americans have allergies (55 million people!) to airborne allergy triggers such as pollen, dust, pet dander, or mold. These allergies have a profound impact on quality of life. Numerous studies show that people with nasal allergies are much likelier to have lower quality of life scores in various categories including energy/fatigue, general health, and mental health. Studies have also shown that children with uncontrolled allergies do not perform optimally in school. Fatigue, energy loss, and difficulty with sleep are often overlooked, but are common finding in people with allergies.
My medications seem to be helping my allergies, why should I see an allergist?
Medications are just one way of treating allergies, and should be used along with a comprehensive plan. Medications are a band-aid that treat symptoms, but don’t get to the root of the disease. Allergy testing can identify exactly what you are allergic to, and then we can teach you avoidance strategies to lessen the impact of those allergens, and decrease the need for medications. We can also talk about the option of a more natural ways to treat your allergies, such as allergy shots.
What are allergy shots, and how do they work?
Simply put: medications treat the symptoms, while allergy shots treat the problem. Allergy shots are unique in that they treat the root of the symptoms, your allergies. This is different from medications, which serve as a band-aid for symptoms.
Allergy shots are a more natural way to treat allergies than medication. Allergy shots consist of the administration of increasing doses of the allergens (such as dust mites, animal dander, mold, pollen, etc.) that lead to allergy and asthma symptoms. The high doses of allergen used, results in the body eventually becoming tolerant to those allergens. This tolerance leads to a decrease of the inflammation that causes allergy and asthma symptoms. For most people the benefit from allergy shots remains for years after the shot schedule has been completed.
