Eczema: Frequently Asked Questions

Eczema is a skin disease that leads to dry, red, itchy, and bumpy skin. Eczema typically starts in childhood, but can recur later in life. Eczema is frequently found in patients with other allergic symptoms (such as food allergy, asthma, and nasal allergies).

Although allergies may not cause the eczema, for many people with eczema, exposure to allergens may exacerbate the eczema.

Skin care is the cornerstone of eczema treatment. Your allergist can advise you regarding the best skin care regimen. For some patients skin testing is helpful to clarify whether or not allergies are contributing to their disease. We counsel all our patients regarding avoidance measures to reduce their eczema symptoms. If needed, we will prescribe topical or oral therapies to treat eczema.
