5 Ways To Combat Dry Skin in Winter

5 Ways To Combat Dry Skin in Winter

Winter is upon us. The holiday season, roaring fires, outdoor sports such as ice skating, skiing and sledding are things we look forward to as the weather gets colder. But winter with its drier, colder air can do a number on your facial skin, making it dry and chapped. Indoor heating also makes the air less humid, drying out skin as well. As the weather changes, your skincare regimen should change too. Here are a few tips to keep your complexion the best it can be.

1. Colder weather means you should use thicker moisturizers

Continue to use a moisturizer every day, but since your environment has changed your skin needs a creamier, heavier moisturizer to counteract the less humid, colder air. Keep in mind not to overuse your moisturizer. Putting on multiple coats is not the same as using one with a creamier consistency.

2. Don’t forget the SPF

Winter sun can still damage skin so you should use products with SPF year-round. Not only is sunscreen essential to preserve your skin but you can save time and money with a product that combines a moisturizer with built-in SPF.

3. Products with hyaluronic acid are essential in a winter skincare routine

Hyaluronic acid has powerful anti-aging properties and it is also one of the premier hydrating ingredients for skin, even for oily or breakout-prone skin.

4. Use a humidifier

Reduce the hot dry air from central heating systems by placing several humidifiers around your home to replace the moisture in the rooms.

5. Try a Hydrafacial

This is a great way to maintain your glowing, hydrated skin in the wintertime. HydraFacial effectively exfoliates and hydrates your skin. Another benefit is the Hydrafacial reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Part of the process includes applying antioxidants, peptides, and hyaluronic acid to your skin – great anti-aging elements. HydraFacial’s also helped reduce acne issues.

Some of the products that we use at Advanced Skincare & Laser work great for dry winter skin. Elta Md tinted moisturizer contains SPF 40 and hyaluronic acid. Neocutis Journee has an SPF with anti-aging growth factors along with hyaluronic acid. If you do not need a product with SPF, ASC Hydrating Serum has hyaluronic acid, peptides, humectants and antioxidants that are perfect for winter months. The peptides and humectants help soften skin and collagen for a smooth and plump finish. Skinmedica’s dermal repair cream is a thick, rich cream also containing hyaluronic acid and antioxidants.

If the variety of different products at the store make you dizzy and you feel you want more advice, seeing a dermatologist or skin care specialist, esthetician, can help. They will analyze your skin type and give you advice on products you should be using to get the best results.

At ASC’s Skincare & Laser Services and Dermatology Specialty Care offices in Fairfield County Connecticut, our board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Kenneth Egan, and Physician Assistant, Jessica Mangiaracina can help you find the right products. In addition to dry skin relief, we provide services in general medical, surgical and cosmetic dermatology. ASC offices are located in Danbury, Norwalk and Ridgefield, CT.
