The Science of Under Eye Puffiness

The Science of Under Eye Puffiness

At Advanced Specialty Care, our approach in addressing cosmetic issues is generally geared towards finding out the root cause and recommending treatments or procedures based on the assessment of the causative factors.

With under-eye puffiness (periorbital puffiness), it turns out not getting enough ‘shut-eye’ has nothing to do with the cause. Although being overly stressed may contribute to the appearance of dark circles and puffiness, there are other factors at play when it comes to the hefty bags beneath your eyes.

Firstly, gravity. The longer you experience the earth’s gravitational pull (in conjunction with advancing age), the more your facial structures will sag. This means the skin, muscles, and ligaments supporting the eyes are less elastic, resulting in baggy lower eyelids.

Next to the pull of gravity, the amount of fat underneath the eyes is also a major influence. Although it has long been believed that under-eye puffiness is a result of fat slipping out of the space around the eye socket due to advancing age, a later study concluded that it has to do with fat expansion rather than fat repositioning. Similar studies on the subject are not conclusive, yet, but it is fair to conclude that there is a clear link between aging and under-eye puffiness.

What Really Works for Under Eye Puffiness
Popular options in preventing under-eye puffiness include getting enough sleep, limiting salt and alcohol intake, and consistent use of eye creams. During initial consultations, the majority of our patients have tried the aforementioned, and are on the lookout for treatments that do not just prevent puffiness, but rather reduce the appearance of the baggy, lower eyelids overall.

Lower eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty at the Advanced Specialty Care clinic can reposition or remove fat underneath the eyes for a more rejuvenated look. Alternatively, facial fillers can fill in the tear trough area for a smoother appearance. A JUVÉDERM® injection can smooth out the transition between the lower eyelids and the upper cheek, subtly reducing puffiness in the process.
