Get to know ENT provider, Donna Haupt, PA-C, at Advanced Specialty Care in Connecticut.
Donna Haupt has over 10 years of experience as an ENT Physician Assistant as well as prior specialty care and family medicine practice experience. Donna shares what ultimately lead her to ear, nose and throat care and what she strives to accomplish as a healthcare provider.
1. How did you get into the field? What lead you to otolaryngology?
As a Physician Assistant, I was trained in all areas of medicine which allowed me, during my first ten years in practice, to develop an wide-ranging background in family medicine, pulmonology, GI medicine and neurology. Eventually I decided to focus on one specialty, working alongside a solo ENT physician for 11 years. Now I have joined ASC, I look forward to a variety of ear, nose and throat medical problems I’ll confront daily, from common to rare conditions, acute issues as well as chronic problems that can be treated with a range of therapeutic and diagnostic procedures in both adults and children.
2. What are your favorite parts about being an ENT provider?
As an ENT provider, I know every day will be different from the next because there are so many different medical problems that can develop. And yet, I try never to forget that one’s health is “the great equalizer.” As individuals, we come from a wide range of diverse backgrounds that set us apart. But when we develop a medical problem, the walls that may separate us suddenly fall away and anyone of us can be left vulnerable and in need. As a healthcare provider, my goal is to get people feeling better and I take that responsibility very seriously knowing I’d want the same level of thoroughness and dedication from a provider caring for any of my family members.
3. What are the most challenging aspects of your job?
Like many of us who practice medicine, I went into it because I wanted to help people and I liked the science of figuring out the “why’s” and the “how to fix it” part of their problems. But there is also an art to medicine that comes when we learn how to listen beyond a patient’s words and ask unasked questions. And perhaps most challenging, to care about patients even when – and especially when—they do not care about themselves.
4. What are you most excited about working at Advanced Specialty Care?
I am most excited to join a cutting-edge practice where my colleagues truly enjoy their work and want to share with me that love of getting patients better. ASC is a place where I know I will continue to learn and grow as a PA, where I have the support of incredibly skilled practitioners and where I know my patients will receive the best care and guidance possible.
5. What do you like to do outside of work?
Outside of work, I continue to develop my landscape painting and portrait drawing skills. My husband and I love to hike, to travel to far flung locales and to tackle the ongoing projects that come with home ownership. And when it gets bitter cold outside, you’ll find me curled up with a good historical novel.
6. What’s on your bucket list?
I would love to take a cooking class in Italy, a painting seminar in southern France or volunteer to assist on a medical mission to a 3rd world community. I also look forward to watching my two sons prosper and grow families of their own.
7. What do you most want patients to know about you?
I believe that to be an excellent medical provider I must focus on diagnosis and treatment but also I must strive to show kindness and empathy in my patient care. Sometimes after a difficult visit, I’ve squeezed a patient’s hand or spent an extra minute explaining a medical problem which I hope has made a small but measurable difference in their healthcare journey.
