Get to know Dr. Jennifer Donath! Dr. Donath, Audiology and Hearing Aid Specialist at Advanced Specialty Care, gives us a look into a day in the life of an Audiologist and also shares what drew her to the field of Audiology.
1. How did you get into the field? What lead you to audiology?
During my early studies, I knew I wanted to work with people and was eager to learn how to use sign language and work with the deaf population. The more I learned about audiology and speech language pathology, I realized I wanted to help all people with hearing impairment, not just the deaf community. I also loved learning about how we hear and produce sound and speech because of my music and singing background.
2. What are your favorite parts about being an audiologist?
I love being an audiologist! I love the interaction with my patients and experiencing the best in people as they trust that I will do all I can to help them hear better. I also have extra training with vestibular/balance patients and love treating patients with dizziness. In 21 years, I have found the profession of audiology to be personally rewarding as I cherish every patient-audiology relationship I develop.
3. What are the most challenging aspects of your job?
When a patient’s prognosis is not good, and there is little I can do to help, I find it challenging to counsel the patient to help them accept their condition and the outcome. Having an empathic approach is helpful, but it can still be difficult.
4. What are you most excited about working at Advanced Specialty Care?
I am thrilled to be part of such a professional and welcoming team. Advanced Specialty Care is so well run and patient care and the overall patient experience is of the upmost importance which is essential for a successful practice. The support system is stellar. I can’t say enough good things about the practice.
5. What do you like to do outside of work?
Aside from writing and recording music, most of my time is spent with my two daughters, husband and family. I moved to Wilton two years ago and have enjoyed becoming part of the community, as much as COVID allows. I love to travel and have family in Australia where I grew up, and visit Europe as often as I can to see family and friends as my husband was born and raised in Germany.
6. What’s on your bucket list?
I still have many countries I would like to visit.
7. What do you most want patients to know about you?
I am sincere and go the extra mile.
