If you have black or blue colored tattoos, you are a candidate for tattoo removal. Tattoo removal is done by an FDA- approved laser called the Q-switched Yag. The pigment is broken up by laser’s pulsing light. The ink particles become shattered, allowing the body to absorb them, fading the tattoo. The Q-switched laser is safe for all skin types, does not burn or cut the skin, and generally leaves no scarring. The pain experienced is about the same as when you get a tattoo, but it takes much less time. Depending on how large the tattoo is and your pain tolerance, the doctor can injected the area with lidocaine to numb it, making the treatment painless.
Treatment time depends on the size of the tattoo. It can take multiple visits to remove a tattoo completely. Each visit can last 10 minutes up to 30 minutes. Again, depending on the size of the tattoo, it can take up to a year to remove it totally. Treatments are done between 6-8 weeks apart. It is normal to have some redness and swelling after the laser treatment. This will subside in a few hours.
