Hearing for the Holidays

Written by Dr. Jennifer Donath

The holidays are here and it is the time of year to be gathering with family and friends.  These cherished moments are so valuable and being able to hear and participate in conversations is so important.

This season, if you or a loved one notice any of the following occurrences or feelings, it probably means it’s time to see one of our Doctors of Audiology for a baseline hearing test:

  • Do you often say “what” or ask people to repeat?
  • Do you feel that you need to look at the person speaking to hear them?
  • Do you struggle in the presence of background noise or when other conversations are competing with whom you are communicating?
  • Do you feel like you can “hear,” but just can’t always understand what people are saying?

Hearing Loss occurs naturally over time and sometimes is not always so obvious.  It is recommended that a baseline hearing test be conducted around 50 years old, or sooner when hearing struggles are noticed.

If hearing aids are recommended, your Audiologist will provide you with information regarding styles and technology levels.  Hearing aids have come a long way, even from where they were just a few years ago, and can help people to hear in even the noisiest of places.  In addition to providing the prescribed amount of volume, the noise compression system controls the sounds and speech automatically, with no manual adjustments required.  Bluetooth enables even greater functionality, allowing phone calls to stream directly into the hearing aids wirelessly and hands-free, and also offers manual changes to volume and sound quality through an app on your smartphone (iPhone or Android).

We all wish you and your family the happiest of times during these momentous celebrations and are here to help improve your (or a loved one’s) hearing to make the holidays that much better.
