Gummy Bear Breast Implants. Are They Right For Me?

Gummy Bear Breast Implants. Are They Right For Me?

Once you’ve decided to get breast augmentation surgery and have consulted with your doctor as to the size and shape that work best for you, one of the next big decisions is what type of implant to get, saline or silicone. You may have heard about “Gummy Bear” implants. Some refer to them as “The Future of Breast Implants” or “The Next Best Thing In Breast Augmentation.” So what are they, and why are they trending?

Breast Implants Over The Years

Silicone and saline have been the popular types of implants. Breast implants have changed over the years in response to various problems, one being leakage. The latest cohesive gel implants largely solve the problem of silicone leakage. These implants are filled with a type of gel that does not act like a fluid. Instead, they are semi-solid and the substance inside does not “flow”. These cohesive gel implants are encased in a silicone rubber membrane or shell, which is available either with a smooth texture or with a rough surface texture. Gummy Bear implants refer to the latest generation of silicone breast implants.

Gummy Bear Implants
What differentiates gummy bear implants is that their form is stable, meaning that if they are cut in half, they keep their shape, like a gummy bear candy. They tend to be firmer and harder than traditional silicone implants. Highly cohesive gel implants also maintain their shape when cut but they are softer and more flexible.

Gummy bear implants are used in exactly the way other breast implants are – they are generally placed under the muscle of the chest wall, behind the breast glands themselves but they may have a more natural consistency because they have the same “bounce’ as normal breast tissue.

Gummy bear implants are available in many sizes and mimic typical breast shapes; they can be round or more anatomically shaped, like a teardrop. Both shape types have their proponents and your plastic surgeon can help you choose the best for your breast shape.

Deciding What’s Best For You
Breast augmentation is generally a safe procedure, usually performed under general anesthesia. Recovery takes a few weeks, but time off from work may usually be a few days.
