Facial Scar Removal

Facial Scar Removal

Facial scars can result from many causes. Surgical removal of skin cancer or a traumatic incident, such as a cut or a scrape, can cause a scar. A burn, either from scalding hot water or contact with hot metal, can also permanently deform the skin. But having a facial scar does not have to permanently mar your face. Scars can be removed or revised by a competent plastic surgeon.

Assessment
Before any facial scar can be corrected, the plastic surgeon will analyze the problem. Exact measurements of the scar will be taken, the depth of the injury assessed, and the parts of the skin damaged listed. The surgeon will be particularly careful in assessing exactly which structures are damaged and which are intact in order to plan the best correction. Photos will also be taken as part of the estimation.

After the preliminary assessment, a plan will be made to correct the deformity, taking into account the person’s needs. Any legal or financial concerns would be addressed at this point. Health insurance companies will generally compensate for facial scars that occurred as a result of an accident. In some cases, legal awards from a lawsuit may be used to pay for a scar revision.

Removal
The actual scar revision may involve excision, which is cutting out the scar. The healthy skin around the scar may be rearranged using a flap of tissue or a wedge of skin. A skin graft may be necessary to resurface the skin, this is sometimes this is done with dermabrasion to improve the texture of the skin. Additionally, lasers can be used to remove pigment or to improve the surface of the skin.

Surgical scar removal is a very effective technique to improve any facial scars. While scar revision may not make the scar disappear completely, it may cause the scar to be much less visible.
