As we enter the cold weather season, we may notice our skin getting more and more dry. Some of us may have a chronic dry skin condition called atopic dermatitis (AKA eczema) that tends to flare in the winter months. People with eczema tend to have very dry skin and when the condition flares, the skin may become inflamed with red, itchy patches.
Here are a few key points to help prevent flares of eczema:
- Frequent moisturization! – Using moisturizers once or twice daily can help reinforce the skin’s integrity and help prevent further inflammation.
- Use soaps, lotions/creams and detergents that are FREE of dyes and fragrances – These can minimize irritation to the skin.
- Avoid irritating fabrics – Fabrics such as polyester or wool can sometimes aggravate already sensitive skin. Cotton fabrics can be gentler on the skin.
If you feel you have eczema and its difficult to control, you may need prescription medications (such as prescription creams and ointments) to help relieve the inflammation from your eczema flare. If you feel you may be having an eczema flare, please make an appointment with one of our specially-trained dermatology providers at Advanced Specialty Care. Our Dermatology physicians and advanced practice providers can help treat your skin conditions and improve your quality of life.
