Breast Lift Surgery Without Implants

Plastic surgery is an ever-changing field.  Innovations make new things possible. However, cultural changes often play a larger role in what people want. This is particularly apparent with increased interest in mastopexy, or breast lift surgery, one of the fast-growing procedures in plastic surgery. In fact, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons reports that the number of breast lifts has grown 70% since 2000, outpacing breast implants 2-to-1.

Why Get A Breast Lift

There are many reasons why women choose a mastopexy. Often a woman’s breast changes over time, losing elasticity and firmness. This can be due to pregnancy, breastfeeding, aging or weight fluctuation. A mastopexy rejuvenates the breasts, making them more youthful-looking.

How Breast Lift Surgery Works

A mastopexy takes the existing breast volume and reshapes the breast at a higher level on the chest. This immediately recreates the upper fullness. The areola is shifted upwards as well and can be made smaller and more symmetrical. This is done by maintaining the areola on a mound of breast tissue called a pedicle that maintains sensation to the areola.

The incisions can vary depending on the degree of sagging there is.  The mildest lift results in a scar that is entirely limited to the edge of the areola itself.  This is called a periareolar lift.  The next level of lifting requires a vertical incision that extends below the areola, down to the breast fold. This is often referred to as a vertical mastopexy or “lollipop” incision. Patients with more exaggerated sagging require an addition incision in the fold. This creates an inverted T incision.  The surgery is typically an outpatient procedure that takes 2-3 hours to perform.

Occasionally a woman will combine a breast lift with an implant if they wish to have a fuller bra cup size. However, women generally wish to stay the same cup size but want to look more shapely without a bra.
