If a person uses the telephone on the same ear as they are wearing a hearing aid, a magnetic coupling called a telecoil (available in most models) usually works very well in quiet situations. But the best receipt of information is always when the two ears are working together. With current hearing aid technology, some hearing aids can send the signal from the phone held at one ear to the other hearing aid at the same time, in real-time. Also available are devices that couple to cell phones or other Bluetooth devices and wirelessly stream the same phone signal to both hearing aids at once. Research shows that these conditions work best.
Many of these devices can also function as a remote control for hearing aids, and may be configured to receive television audio directly as well. Of course, if a person only hears in one ear, or there is a large difference between the hearing losses in the two ears, customized telephone solutions are necessary.
