Why Your Acne Gets Worse in the Summer (& What Can Help)

Written by Madison Richard, PA-C

Warm weather can be great for beach days, outdoor activities, and longer evenings, but for many people, it also brings more breakouts.

If your acne seems to flare up every summer, you’re not imagining it. Heat, humidity, sweat, sunscreen, and heavier product use can all contribute to clogged pores and irritation. The good news is that with a few smart adjustments, summer acne can often be managed more effectively.

Why Acne Can Flare in Warmer Weather

Acne develops when pores become clogged with oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria. In the summer, several factors can make that more likely.

Sweat and oil production often increase in hot, humid weather. When sweat mixes with oil, sunscreen, makeup, or dirt on the skin, it can contribute to clogged pores… especially on the face, chest, shoulders, and back. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using products labeled non-comedogenic, oil-free, or won’t clog pores, especially on areas prone to breakouts.

Another common trigger is friction. Hats, helmets, sports gear, backpacks, and tight clothing can trap sweat against the skin, creating irritation and breakouts. This is sometimes called “acne mechanica,” and it is common in athletes and active patients.

Sunscreen Is Still Essential

Some patients avoid sunscreen because they worry it will make acne worse. But skipping SPF is not the answer. Sun exposure can increase the risk of sun damage and premature aging, and some acne medications can make the skin more sensitive to sunlight.

The key is choosing the right sunscreen. Look for a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, and choose formulas labeled non-comedogenic or oil-free if you are acne-prone. Dermatologists recommend broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30+ for outdoor protection.

What Can Help Prevent Summer Breakouts?

A few small routine changes can make a big difference:

  • Cleanse gently after sweating
  • Avoid scrubbing, which can irritate the skin
  • Wash sweaty hats, towels, headbands, and pillowcases regularly
  • Use non-comedogenic sunscreen and skincare products
  • Avoid heavy makeup or thick products when possible
  • Shower after workouts or outdoor activity
  • Don’t pick or squeeze breakouts

The AAD also recommends blotting sweat from the skin rather than wiping aggressively, since rubbing can irritate the skin and contribute to breakouts.

When to See a Dermatology Specialist

If your acne is painful, leaving marks, worsening despite over-the-counter products, or affecting your confidence, it may be time for a dermatology evaluation.

Acne is not one-size-fits-all. Some patients need prescription topical medications, oral medications, hormonal treatment, or a different skincare routine entirely. A Dermatology provider can help determine what type of acne you have and what treatment plan makes the most sense for your skin.
