Meet the Provider: Q&A with Dermatology Specialist Madison Richard, PA-C

Advanced Specialty Care is pleased to welcome Madison Richard, PA-C to our dermatology team. Madison is a specialty-trained dermatology physician’s assistant who provides care for both pediatric and adult patients, diagnosing and treating a wide range of skin conditions.

We asked Madison a few questions so patients can get to know her a better–from what inspired her career in dermatology to the skincare advice she shares most often with patients.

Q: What inspired you to pursue dermatology?

A: For as long as I can remember, I have always wanted to work in medicine. My mom is a primary care doctor, and I loved hearing her stories and witnessing her passion for her career while I was growing up. After graduating college, I worked as a medical assistant in a dermatology office in Richmond, Virginia to gain clinical experience. I loved the fast-paced environment and procedural aspects of dermatology, but most importantly, I enjoyed seeing the doctors and physician assistants build lasting relationships with their patients and patients’ families. That experience solidified my desire to work in dermatology.

Q: What types of conditions or treatments do you most enjoy helping patients with?

A: I enjoy helping patients with a range of skin conditions, but I particularly like managing rashes and acne. I certainly have a love-hate relationship with rashes, as some can be very satisfying to manage with quick results, while others may be mysterious, requiring a comprehensive workup and often collaboration with other dermatology or non-dermatology specialists. Developing a treatment plan can significantly improve a patient’s quality of life for acute, chronic, simple, and complicated rashes. I also like treating acne because managing this condition can make large strides in patients’ confidence and there are many different options and regimens to approach acne.

Q: What’s one skincare mistake you see patients make all the time?

A: I often see patients use over-the-counter antibiotic ointments, which can actually cause a skin reaction called contact dermatitis in the application area due to the ingredients. Many patients have sensitivities to ingredients in these topical ointments, which is why I like to recommend plain old petrolatum jelly for healing cuts. If there is any concern for infection, it is important to see a healthcare professional for prescription topical or oral antibiotics.

Q: What’s one piece of advice you give almost every patient?

A: I recommend SPF of 30 or higher every day on the face, neck and hands to pretty much every patient. Sunscreen use starting at a young age can prevent skin cancers, precancerous lesions called actinic keratoses, and premature aging of the skin. I also recommend SPF of 50 or higher on all areas exposed to the sun any time a patient will be spending time in the sun, such as playing outdoor sports, hanging out at the beach or working outside. Sunscreen should ideally be reapplied every 90 minutes to 2 hours, and the highest risk for sun exposure is between the hours of 10 am and 2 pm. Hats and sun-protective clothing are effective as well.

Q: What do you enjoy doing in your free time, when you’re not seeing patients?

A: When I am not in the office, I spend a lot of time walking or hiking with my black lab Bucky, hanging out with my family and friends, watching sports, exercising, and exploring the restaurants and activities in downtown Ridgefield. I also love to travel and be outdoors.
