Rosacea tends to appear in men and women between the ages of 40 and 60; however, it can occur at any age. The cause of rosacea is unknown; there have been links to genetics, microorganisms, ultraviolet light, and abnormal blood vessels in the face. It is more common in individuals with fair skin and who have a family history of rosacea.
Fortunately, there are many ways to treat rosacea. Redness and dilated blood vessels on the face can be treated with laser procedures and topical medications. The laser procedures are quick and require no downtime. On average 2-3 treatments are needed, and the procedure lasts about 5 to 10 minutes. Topical medications usually need to be applied for at least 4-6 weeks to see improvement. It is important to also avoid the triggers listed above and to use sun protection.
