The Role of Sinus Disease in Asthma

The Role of Sinus Disease in Asthma

For many years, it has been thought that sinus problems can make asthma worse. As many as 70% of people with asthma report that they have sinus problems at some point. Asthma is also related to nasal polyps in many people.

The best scientific explanation is that sinus disease involves the production of chemicals that can have an irritating effect on cells in the body that circulate in the bloodstream. The chemicals cause inflammation and can trigger the cells in the body to produce more inflammation, particularly in the lungs.

Sinus surgery can help many patients suffering from asthma. But the first and foremost line of treatment for asthma involves medication. Allergists, pulmonologists and many internists and pediatricians can provide medication. Whoever treats you is not as important as how. A complete evaluation of breathing and allergies should be done. Medications should be used as recommended. Many people need to use medication every day to help control asthma. When people show signs and symptoms of sinus problems: chronic thick mucus, nasal drip, recurrent infections, their doctors will often enlist the help of ENT surgeons.

There are many studies that have shown that sinus surgery can help to control severe asthma when asthma is worsened by sinus symptoms. However, you and your doctor must consider carefully if you would benefit from surgery.

The outlook for people with asthma after sinus surgery is good. Studies show that as many as 65%- 75% of people have less severe asthma, fewer hospitalizations and fewer exacerbations of their asthma after successful sinus surgery.
