Why Eczema Flares In The Winter

Why Eczema Flares In The Winter

Written by Dr. Dmitriy Timerman

If your eczema seems to get worse during the winter, you’re not imagining it. Cold weather, indoor heating, and changes in humidity can all trigger flare-ups (even in patients with well-controlled skin during other times of the year). Understanding why winter affects eczema can help prevent symptoms before they spiral into redness and discomfort.

Why Winter Makes Eczema Worse

Eczema (atopic dermatitis) is a condition that affects the skin barrier. When the barrier isn’t functioning properly, moisture escapes more easily and irritants can penetrate the skin more readily.

During the winter, several factors make this worse:

  • Cold, Dry Air: Outdoor winter air holds much less moisture than summer air. Low humidity draws moisture out of the skin, leaving it dry, tight, and more prone to cracking.
  • Indoor Heating: Forced-air heating systems further reduce humidity indoors. This constant dry environment can strip the skin of its natural protective oils.
  • Hot Showers: Hot showers may feel good in cold weather, but they can worsen eczema by removing natural oils and further weakening the skin barrier.
  • Heavy Fabrics: Wool and synthetic fabrics, and multiple clothing layers can irritate sensitive skin and trigger itching.

Common Winter Eczema Symptoms

Winter flare-ups may cause:

  • Increased itching
  • Red or inflamed patches
  • Dry, flaky or cracked skin
  • Burning or stinging
  • Thickened skin from scratching

In children, eczema may worsen on the cheeks, hands, or behind the knees. In adults, hands are especially vulnerable due to frequent washing and cold exposure.

How to Prevent Winter Flare-Ups

The key to controlling eczema in the winter is protecting and repairing the skin barrier.

Some simple strategies include:

  • Moisturize Immediately After Showering: Apply a thick cream or ointment within a few minutes of bathing to lock in moisture.
  • Use Lukewarm Water: Short, warm showers are better than long, hot ones.
  • Choose Gentle Cleansers: Avoid fragranced soaps or body washes that can strip the skin.
  • Run a Humidifier: Adding moisture to indoor air can significantly reduce dryness.
  • Wear Soft, Breathable Fabrics: Cotton layers are less irritating than wool or synthetics.

When to See a Specialist

If eczema symptoms are:

  • Interfering with sleep
  • Spreading or worsening
  • Not improving with over-the-counter moisturizers
  • Frequently becoming infected

It may be time for a medical evaluation.

The board-certified Dermatology and Allergy specialists at Advanced Specialty Care evaluate eczema in both children and adults. Treatment may include prescription topical medications, anti-inflammatory therapies, allergy evaluation, or guidance on long-term skin barrier management.

Don’t Wait for Spring!

Many patients assume eczema will improve once winter ends, but untreated flare-ups can persist or worsen over time.

Winter is actually a great time to get symptoms under control so your skin is healthier year-round.
