When Is The Best Time To Start My Allergy Medications?

In today’s world, we are all aware of medication overuse and side effects. But for those suffering from seasonal allergies, such as pollen allergies, symptoms such as itchy eyes, sneezing, runny nose, nasal congestion, sinus pressure, headache, fatigue, post nasal drip, may warrant the use of allergy medications. One of the benefits of allergy testing, is gaining a greater understanding of your triggers, and using that information to make a seasonal plan of when to start and stop allergy medications.

Many allergy medications work best if they are started before your symptoms begin. After being tested for allergies, you will have a detailed breakdown of all the major types of pollens that may be leading to your allergy symptoms (as well as perennial triggers such as cats/dogs/dust mites/mold).We test for more than twenty different types of pollen found in Connecticut.

For those allergic to tree pollens, we often suggest starting medications about two weeks before the onset of spring pollen season. That can vary depending on the weather that year, but early March is a reasonable starting point. Tree pollen will continue in Connecticut typically until the end of May.

For those allergic to grass pollen, the best time to start your allergy medications is late April to early May, and will continue into the summer. Grass will continue to pollinate through the summer.

For those allergic to ragweed pollen, the best time to start your medications is early August. Ragweed will continue to pollinate until the winter frost hits, stopping pollen from being released. In addition to ragweed, there are other fall weeds in Fairfield County that are prime causes of allergy symptoms. These include pigweed, lambs quarter, cocklebur, and mugwort, and they typically start pollinating in September, stopping with the winter frost.

Another option for those looking to limit their use of allergy medications is to use allergy drops or allergy shots, which is a more natural way of treating allergies.
