Allergies are nothing to sneeze at Here’s what you should know

Maybe your eyes are constantly itching; or your nose is running and you’re sneezing but you’re sure you don’t have a cold; maybe you have itchy bumps, but don’t remember encountering mosquitoes; or you’re having trouble getting a deep breath and feel like you’re wheezing. If you’ve experienced any of these scenarios, you are most likely part of the some 25 millions people in the U.S. who have allergies.

Allergies happen when the body’s immune system over reacts to normally harmless substances, such as pollen, food, pet dander or even dust. For many people, allergens aren’t a problem. But for about 1 in 12 Americans, their immune systems identify certain substances as threats, causing some type of allergic response.

Create an anti-allergy environment for you and your family
1.Avoid smoking
2.Avoid using strong chemical- or fragrance-containing cleaning supplies
3.If you have pets, bathe them weekly and keep them off the furniture
4.Keep allergy susceptible people away when you dust
5.Use dust-mite impermeable covers for mattresses and pillows
6.Avoid pests by never leaving out food or crumbs

Studies show that the rates of allergy are on the rise. In fact, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have reported that from 2001 to 2011, the number of Americans with asthma increased by 28 percent. And research from the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (ACAAI) has shown that scientists are seeing a corresponding rise in allergy rates as well.

Why are allergies and asthma rates on the increase?

Many experts believe environmental factors are a main contributor to asthma and allergies. But while there are no certain explanations for the increases, there are several possible theories:
1.The “hygiene hypothesis” — over-sanitizing a child’s environment can lead to decreased resistance to allergens
2.Climate changes that have triggered a rise in pollen levels
3.Air pollution
4.Overuse of antibiotics
5.Genetics
