What Size Breast Implant Is Right For Me?

What Size Breast Implant Is Right For Me?

This is the most common question we are asked by patients seeking breast augmentation surgery. Most patients search the Internet to find out details about breast augmentation prior to seeking consultation with a physician. But most of the information available does not address the patient’s most important query – what is the ideal implant for me?

The answer for most people is much easier than it seems. There are several factors to take into consideration when determining the proper implant size for someone. When these factors are combined with a good patient interview, the ideal size becomes apparent.

First, your own desires should be clarified. Typical questions to ask yourself:

  • Do you mind if friends or family notice your breasts have changed?
  • Do you mind if other people notice your breasts in tight clothing or dresses?
  • Do you mind if the breast is prominent past the outside of the chest wall (the so-called “side-boob” look)?
  • Would you accept additional incisions if a breast lift were also necessary?
  • Do you want a more teardrop shape or would you prefer a more rounded appearance?
  • Do you have a preference for the feel of a saline implant or a silicon implant?

A physical examination is also important in determining proper breast implant size. Your height and weight are important considerations. Examination of the chest is also important. Physical attributes that you and your doctor will look at include:

  • How much skin laxity is present?
  • Are the nipples in the correct position, or are they low, or perhaps high?
  • How wide is the chest wall?
  • Are there stretch marks?
  • Is there nipple asymmetry?
  • Is one breast larger?
  • Are there differences in the rib cage from one side to another?

Although this may seem like a large number of questions to consider, our role as surgeons is to take the answers and find the ideal implant for you to achieve your individual goal for breast augmentation. The ultimate goal of this surgery is a satisfied patient, and choosing the perfect implant is the key.
