What Can I Do For My Itchy Eyes?

What Can I Do For My Itchy Eyes?

This particular spring pollen allergy season has been rather “itchy” for those with seasonal allergies!  The pollen in the air this spring can cause allergy eye symptoms for those with allergies to tree and/or grass.  The allergy eye symptoms consist of eye itching/rubbing, watery and/or crusted discharge, puffiness around the eyes, and eye redness.   As a practicing Allergist, I have noticed that the main complaint from people suffering from their pollen allergies is “red, puffy, itchy, watery eyes”.   This can be annoying and frustrating for you as you try to get through your daily life activities.

Here are some helpful tips to alleviate your allergy eye symptoms:
  1. Take a 24-hour acting oral antihistamine as needed
  2. Take over the counter allergy eye drops as needed
  3. Wear Sunglasses to protect your eyes from the pollen when outdoors
  4. Rinse out eyes/face several times a day
  5. Take a shower and wash your hair every bedtime to wash off all the pollen
  6. Once home from school/work, to change clothes and wash eyes/face immediately

It is likely that despite the above measures your eyes may still be itchy, watery. It is hard and unrealistic to stay indoors and completely avoid the pollen! However, it may be wise to stay indoors on an afternoon where the pollen is on a high level count. Please monitor the tree pollen and grass pollen counts during the spring months.

There are other treatment options available that will serve as a long-term management plan for you or your child. If you are truly allergic or “sensitized” to the pollen, then the allergy symptoms may still occur despite the over the counter medications and avoidance measures. It is advisable to see an allergist for further evaluation, consisting of allergy testing and further discussion on long-term therapy options such as immunotherapy Immunotherapy is a “natural way to get desensitized to your environmental allergies” so that you are able to tolerate the pollen and your other environmental allergens without having to suffer from allergy eye and nasal symptoms. At Advanced Allergy and Asthma Care, we offer two different ways of delivering immunotherapy – allergy injections and home-based sublingual (“under the tongue”) allergy drops.
