Can a medication used to treat high blood pressure also treat female hormonal acne? Advanced Specialty Care’s Dermatology PA, Jessica Mangiaracina, shares her own personal experience and weighs-in on a recent article about the use of Spironolactone to treat women’s acne.
Spironolactone is a great drug to use for the right patient: female adult cystic acne that flares around the menstrual cycle. It is questionable whether it will replace antibiotic treatments. The reason for that is because it is a long term medication and takes about 3-4 months to see results from it.
It does have a great safety profile and is safe to be on long term, however, for those who do not want to be on a long term medication and would like a quicker fix, antibiotics are the option. I sometimes put patients on both medications at once. The goal is to have patients on antibiotics for no more than 3-4 months. I have patients in which spironolactone works great, I myself am on the medication for acne, and in others it does not work.
Acne treatments vary from person to person and it is always a conversation between patient and clinician to come to a treatment plan that is safe, effective and comfortable with the patient.
