Treating Hair Loss

Hair loss is a common cause of concern for both men and women. In men, the most common, male pattern baldness is related to aging in those who inherited the gene for this tendency. Hair loss in women is less common and is less related to genetic influences and more linked to hormonal causes. Many other causes of hair loss exist such as radiation treatment of the scalp for various problems as well as chemotherapy, thyroid disease and sepsis.

Early hair loss is best treated with minoxidil, usually applied as a shampoo or a topical agent. It is most effective in those losing hair at an early age, when hair loss has begun. Other creams such as steroid creams can be used in other instances, but these treatments are best for very specific causes of hair loss.

Many other non-surgical types of hair restoration are available without a prescription from non- medical practitioners. These include laser therapy, warming therapy and massage, among others. But these methods are uniformly not effective.

Anyone losing hair should first be seen by a dermatologist. Since there are some hair loss problems that are reversible, a medical exam may be necessary to make sure the hair loss is not due to an underlying medical condition or may be related to nutrition or thyroid disease.

For some, surgical management of hair loss is the best option. Historically, multiple follicle hair plugs were transplanted from the back or sides of the head to the area of hair loss. This led to a noticeable pebbled appearance. That process was abandoned in favor of micro-grafting where individual hair follicles are transplanted in the hair deficient scalp. This current technique gives a much-improved appearance. It can be repeated and the areas where the hairs were removed are not noticeable.

While visiting a dermatologist would be the first step in evaluating the cause of hair loss, a consultation with a plastic surgeon who performs the surgical procedure would be the next step. ASC’s multi-specialty medical practice, that includes both dermatology and cosmetic & plastic surgery, allows our physicians to consult with one another to give our patients the best results. We have dermatology offices and cosmetic & plastic surgery offices in the Fairfield County, CT towns of Danbury, Norwalk, and Ridgefield.
