The Most Common Cosmetic & Plastic Surgery Procedures In The U.S.

Patients, friends and colleagues in our often ask me and the other plastic surgery specialists in our office, “what are the most common cosmetic & plastic surgery procedures in the U.S.?” The answer to this question can be broken down into two categories-surgical and nonsurgical (or office based procedures).

For surgical procedures, the most common plastic surgery procedures in descending order are:

  1. Breast Augmentation
  2. Liposuction
  3. Nose Reshaping
  4. Eyelid Surgery
  5. Tummy Tuck

Among nonsurgical procedures, the five most common are:

  1. Botox
  2. Soft Tissue Fillers
  3. Chemical Peel
  4. Laser Hair Removal
  5. Microdermabrasion

The top five procedures in each list have remained steady over the last several years. This speaks favorably to the success and overall high satisfaction rate of these techniques. Breast augmentation has been performed for many decades with reliable results. In addition, the improvement in breast implant technology over the past several years also reduces the likelihood of implant rupture and need for additional surgeries.

Liposuction

Liposuction is a reliable method for permanent removal of fat from problem areas. The improvements in powered cannulas (or the tube that is used to remove the fat) and post-operative regimens has resulted in faster recovery times for people.

Nose Surgery (Rhinoplasty)

Nose surgery can have a dramatic positive effect on how people view themselves. Many people feel that their nose does not fit their face (often I hear complaints that their nose is too large or undefined). In other cases, people want to straighten a crooked nose following trauma. Either way, the outcome is a more healthy outlook on their facial attractiveness.

Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Eyelid surgery can be performed to remove excess skin and fat from the upper or lower eyelids. The aging process typically results in drooping, excess skin, and bulging eyelids. These changes also make the eye look smaller and the face appearing “tired”. Eyelid surgery can easily correct these issues and is an outpatient procedure with a 1-2 week recovery. When performed properly, eyelid procedures do not change one’s face, but restore it to the way it was prior to the aging process taking hold.

Tummy Tucks (Abdominoplasty)

Tummy tucks are most commonly performed in women who have had children or men and women who have lost large amounts of weight. This operation dramatically improves the contour of the abdomen by permanently removing extra fat and skin, while tightening the abdominal muscles. It has a very high satisfaction rate and a low rate of complications.

Botox and Facial Fillers

Botox and facial fillers have experienced exponential growth in recent years. People have discovered that these brief office-based treatments can take years off their appearance with no downtime. The cost is also less than surgical procedures. The key to a good result with Botox and fillers is to find a physician who is knowledgeable in facial anatomy and experienced in injections. The doctor should consult with the patient and develop a personalized plan, paying attention to the person’s desires, facial anatomy, and budget. When performed properly, these injections improve trouble areas on the face without being noticed by friends and family.
