For Cosmetic and Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Prashant Soni, his artistic talent extends far beyond the operating room.
By day, Dr. Soni’s canvas is the human body where he combines advanced medicine with precision artistry to carry out complex cosmetic and reconstructive procedures from facelifts to post-mastectomy breast reconstructions. But outside of seeing patients at Advanced Specialty Care or performing surgeries at the hospital, he can be found chalking up entirely different works of art with his family–on a chalkboard. What was initially a central space for family notes and reminders, the chalkboard in his house quickly transformed into a canvas where whimsical drawings, often inspired by the unabridged creativity of his three children, come to life. For the Soni household, chalk art has become a family affair providing a creative outlet and precious family bonding time; something that can be in short supply when you’re a surgeon.
At the chalkboard, Dr. Soni treats each design like a surgical case. Before ever putting chalk to the board, he spends time carefully planning the design. He begins with a roughly sketched concept then moves on to a full-sized pencil and paper drawing. After the full-sized drawing is complete, he tapes it in sections to the chalkboard to make sure the placement and proportion of each element are just right. The planning phase can be exhausting but the end results make it all worthwhile.
To date, the chalkboard has showcased masterpieces including Birthday art for his children and wife, holiday landscapes, movie scenes, animals and more. And even though each piece will need to be erased to make room for the next one, the memories made at the family chalkboard will last forever.
