Get to know Audiologist, Olivia Mitchell, Au.D.! Dr. Mitchell, Audiology and Hearing Aid Specialist at Advanced Specialty Care, shares what inspired to her pursue a career as an Audiologist and the reward that comes from helping her patients.
1. How did you get into the field of audiology?
Ever since I was young, I knew I wanted to work in the medical field. I was introduced to audiology during my undergrad studies and instantly fell in love. Helping people communicate with their loved ones quickly became my passion and I am so excited to start my career doing this at Advanced Specialty Care.
2. What are your favorite parts about being an audiologist?
My favorite part of being an audiologist is watching people’s lives transform, especially when they are initially hesitant about hearing devices. I love when patients come back for their follow-up appointments with a positive and noticeable change in demeanor, more upbeat and happier, that they attribute to finally being able to hear better. These success stories make me look forward to coming to work every day! I also really enjoy counseling and educating my patients on hearing protection and hearing preservation.
3. What are the most challenging aspects of your job?
The most challenging aspect of my job is getting past the stigma of hearing aids! Coincidentally, it is also one of my favorite parts of the job. I love educating and counseling on the importance of hearing devices and why they should not be viewed negatively. Hearing loss can be detrimental to a person’s well-being and social life and using hearing devices to improve your hearing, and life, is nothing to be ashamed of!
4. What are you most excited about working at Advanced Specialty Care?
I very excited to be a part of a multi-specialty practice and look forward to learning from the other providers and growing as an audiologist.
5. What do you like to do outside of work?
I love to travel and try new foods. You can also find me playing volleyball, visiting the beach and spending time with friends and family.
6. What’s on your bucket list?
I have a pretty lengthy bucket list, but the two at the top of my list are backpacking across Europe and attending an Ellen DeGeneres show!
7. What do you want patients to know about you?
I want my patients to know that it is my duty and passion to improve their quality of life through better hearing and communication. I treat every patient individually and evaluate their specific needs and lifestyle to make the most appropriate recommendation. I am lively and outgoing, and I strive to create a safe space for my patients to open up about their communication difficulties.
