As an audiologist at Advanced Specialty Care for the past 16 years, I have seen thousands of patients; I also live in the same city as our primary Danbury location. I love living where I work. When there is a big storm, my patients and I experience similar problems. When we have a week-long power outage, I worry about how my patients with rechargeable hearing aids are getting along.
I also love living where I work because I recognize so many street names. Hearing aid patients came in several times a year for check-ups so I tend to associate patients with their address. Often, I see a street sign and a patient’s name comes to mind and I also smile when I think of how many of my patients are neighbors and don’t even know it.
When children come in for a hearing test, I take comfort in the idea that they are my own children’s classmates or that they may go to high school with my kids several years down the road. This creates such a strong sense of community between my patients and myself and I feel good knowing that I’m serving my neighbors, my children’s classmates and other members of the community.
Working in the community that I live in is more than just an easy commute. I see my patients at church, at the grocery store and at stop lights and this allows me to connect with them on a much deeper level and better understand their needs. My patients are able to relax and open up knowing that we can relate to each other and often times, what was once a potentially intimidating appointment with a doctor, takes a conversational approach.
So when the power is out or school is cancelled, just know that we are weathering the storm together and that you, my patients, are also at the front of my mind and are always close by!
