Considering Breast Reduction Surgery?

Considering Breast Reduction Surgery?

Having overly large breasts can cause both physical and emotional issues, impairing one’s ability to lead a full, active life. Breast reduction, or mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure that removes excess breast tissue in order to create a breast size in proportion with your body and to lessen any physical pain or discomfort.

Are You A Candidate For Breast Reduction?

Many women who want this procedure have had large breasts for years and have suffered with neck and back pain. They may also have a rash beneath their breasts because of the moist skin. Large breasts can also make exercise difficult. Women may have a hard time finding bras that fit properly. Well-fitted clothing may also be problematic because of the disproportion caused by a large chest. Some men, those with gynecomastia, may also ask for breast reduction – the procedure is similar.

Women and men who need this type of surgery will require a consultation with a plastic surgeon. The surgery is considered reconstructive and if the person fulfills certain requirements a pre-certification from their insurance company can be obtained. The surgery will then be considered a covered procedure by the insurance company, which will help pay for the surgeon, the anesthesiologist and the use of the operating room.

5 Key Questions To Ask Your Cosmetic/Plastic Surgeon During A Consultation

What To Expect During And After Mammoplasty

Breast reduction surgery is an outpatient procedure performed under general anesthesia. It can take from 2-4 hours and is usually performed in a hospital or a surgical center.

The surgery can safely reduce breast size from any size to either a “C” cup or “D” cup. Your plastic surgeon will help you make a decision regarding the final breast size. Any unevenness in the size of the breasts can also be corrected during the surgery.

Recovery from breast reduction surgery usually takes 2-3 weeks, although some patients require only a week off from work. People usually require pain medication after the surgery as well as antibiotics. Our surgeons at ASC use drains after the surgery; these are removed several days after the operation. In addition, our policy at ASC is to send all the tissue that has been removed to a pathologist for examination to make sure there is no breast cancer.

At ASC’s cosmetic & plastic surgery offices in Fairfield County, CT, our board certified plastic surgeons offer breast reduction surgery, as well as neck and facelifts, eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty (nose surgery), liposuction and abdominoplasty (tummy tuck). ASC offices are located in the towns of Danbury, New Milford, Norwalk, Ridgefield and Southbury.
