Keep windows in your home & vehicle closed to prevent drifting pollen from entering. The primary culprit of fall allergies is ragweed pollen. Though the ragweed plant only lives one season, it packs a powerful punch. A single plant can produce up to 1 billion pollen grains!

Here are some tips to help you get through the seasons’ change:

• Save outdoor activities for rainy, cloudy & windless days when pollen levels are lower.
• During & after gardening or raking leaves, avoid touching your eyes & face & be sure to take a shower & change your clothes after spending time outside.

If you regularly suffer from allergy symptoms, your symptoms interfere with your day to day activities or over-the-counter treatments aren’t working, schedule an appointment with an Allergist to evaluate your symptoms & discuss treatment options such as immunotherapy. 

Immunotherapy provides a more natural treatment for allergies & immunotherapy treatment with allergy shots is often covered by insurance. (Check with your insurance to confirm coverage/benefits)

Hearing Loss & Developmental Delays in Children

Hearing problems & hearing loss in children & infants may be mistaken as a developmental delay, a difficulty paying attention or a difficulty understanding & processing information. It may also present as a behavioral issue or learning disability.

Because of the significant impact that hearing loss poses for a child’s development, the most important factor in identifying any pediatric hearing problem is TIME. We encourage parents with any concern about their child’s hearing to seek an evaluation with a trained Audiologist.

At Advanced Specialty Care, we offer pediatric hearing tests as well as testing for Auditory Processing Disorder. In conjunction with highly specialized hearing tests, we work with families to ensure all the correct pre-evaluation information has been gathered for the best picture of a child’s hearing & auditory processing ability. If a child is identified with auditory processing disorder, educational modifications, listening devices and listening therapy may be recommended.

Does Your Child Suffer From Chronic Sore Throats?

Frequent sore throats & tonsillitis, caused by viruses or bacteria such as strep throat, are common in children & teens especially as children go back to school & the cold weather begins.

Most isolated sore throats & tonsillitis resolve on their own. With early proper treatment, bacterial throat infections typically resolve however there are certain circumstances where you should seek evaluation & further treatment from an ENT.

Signs to look out for are:

• Sore throat lasting more than 4-5 days despite proper treatment
• Chronic sore throats (those lasting over 2 weeks)*
• Recurring sore throats (3 in 3 months, 5 in 6 months)*
• Presence of an abscess (severe swallowing difficulty, difficulty opening mouth)
• High fevers (>102.5)
• Persistent Breathing difficulties and/or sleep disturbance after infection resolves
  * with or without infection

When left untreated, problems such as strep throat can cause complications so it’s important to receive prompt & proper care.
