Eyelid Surgery: One Of The Most Popular Cosmetic Surgeries in the U.S.

It is often said that the “eyes are the gateway to the soul”.  Understandably, it can be quite distressing when the appearance of your eyes changes as you age. Patients in my Danbury, New Milford, Ridgefield and Norwalk, CT offices tell me that they feel as youthful as ever, but their eyes make the world perceive them as tired or unenthusiastic.  Eyelid surgery, specifically an eyelid lift is designed to change this. In fact, this is one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries in the U.S. with more than 200,000 people choosing this cosmetic procedure for the face each year.

What is an upper eyelid lift?
As a person ages, there is a natural stretching of the upper eyelid skin. This results from the cumulative effects of blinking over the years and it cannot be prevented.  An upper eyelid lift (also called an upper blepharoplasty) removes a precise amount of excess skin. The goal of this procedure is to recreate the natural eyeshadow area. The incision is hidden directly in the existing upper eyelid crease.

An upper blepharoplasty can be done in the office with local anesthetic alone. It does not require sedation or general anesthesia.  Most people have some bruising that lasts for about a week, but can be easily hidden with makeup after this.

What is a lower eyelid lift?
Because the skin of the lower eyelids is naturally very thin, it is susceptible to solar damage and wrinkling. As you age, the area under your eyes usually appears puffy along with an apparent darkening of the skin. The skin also looks loose and wrinkled as well.  The cause of this twofold. The existing fat pads that lay below the lower eyelid skin begin to distend. This creates a puffy appearance. The way light cascades over the fat pads also cast a shadow along with the lower lids that makes the lower lids look darker.

A lower eyelid lift (also called lower lid blepharoplasty) corrects both these anatomical issues. The fat is removed through an incision and the skin is tightened by removing a small amount of skin just under the eyelash line. The incision, after it has healed, is very fine. This procedure is typically done in the operating room under anesthesia.  Bruising lasts about 7-10 days.

There is very little discomfort associated with these procedures and people are typically back to work in about a week.  These procedures create dramatic, but natural-looking improvements within just a few days’ time.  Plus, the results continue to improve over the following few weeks.

For those who feel that sagging and puffy eyelids are masking your inner vitality, consider the benefits of an eyelid lift procedure.  Contact us to learn more about upper and lower eyelid surgery at Advanced Specialty Care’s plastic and cosmetic surgery practice in Fairfield County with offices in Norwalk, New Milford, Ridgefield, and Danbury.
